Dirk Nowitzki is a German professional basketball player who was born on June 19, 1978 in Wurzburg, West Germany. He is best known for his long and successful career in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki has a current net worth of approximately $135 million.
While Dirk comes from a family of athletes, he did not start playing basketball until later in his childhood. Initially, he played both handball and tennis, but developed an interest in basketball after it became clear that his height and athleticism was a good fit for the sport.
After playing for DJK Wurzburg, a local professional team at the age of 15, he was spotted by former German pro Holger Geschwindner. Geschwindner would become his personal coach and the person that Dirk credits for his success at the professional level.
In 1998, after a 4-year career with DJK Wurzburg, Dirk was drafted 9th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks would quickly trade Nowitzki to the Mavericks in a three-way deal that also included the Phoenix Suns.
Although Dirk struggled mightily throughout the first year, his potential became clear to the Mavericks staff. After Mark Cuban bought the team in 1999 and began to change the culture, Dirk began to take off. In his second year, he went on to average over 17 points a game to go along with 6.5 rebounds per game.
Over the course of his career, Dirk has been an NBA All-Star on 12 different occasions. He also led the Mavericks to the NBA championship in 2011 when he received the Finals MVP.
In 2010, he signed a 4-year, $80 million contract that at the time made him one of the highest paid players in the league. In 2014, he signed a significantly discounted 3-year, $25 million deal to remain with the team.
