Doris Roberts was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 4, 1925. She was a American actress of film, stage and television best known for her role as Raymond Barone’s mom on the sitcom ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. Roberts approximate net worth has been estimated to be approximately $14 million at the time of her death in April of 2016.
Doris has earned her fame and wealth by acting in both television shows and films. Doris was married to Michael Cannata, but the couple divorced in 1962. The couple had a son together, Michael Cannata Jr. In 1963, she married William Goyen. The marriage lasted till the death of William Goyen in 1983.
Roberts’s career started with a mix of theater and television projects. On small screen, Roberts appeared on such shows as Starlight Theatre and Studio One. She made her Broadway debut in 1955 in the production of ‘The Time of Your Life by Saroyan’. The very same year, she appeared in ‘The Desk Set’ by William Marchant.
She also appeared in the episodes of Naked City (1958-1963), Way Out , Ben Casey (1963) and The Defenders (1962-1963). Doris Roberts found her niche playing supporting roles, beginning with ‘The American Dream’ by Edward Albee. Roberts made her film debut in 1961’s ,Something World; followed by the ‘Honeymoon Killers’ in 1970, Little Murders, Such Good Friends, No Way to Treat a Lady and Taking of the Pelham One Two Three.
In 1978, Doris Roberts performed in a film about John F. Kennedy’s assassination, and Ruby and Oswald, in which she took the role of Jack Ruby’s sister. Doris also appeared momentarily in The Rose, as the mum of the film character played by Bette Middle.
In 1979, Doris was cast yet in another maternal role on the television series Angie, which made her a recognizable celebrity for the very first time. Following this role in Angie, she joined the cast of Remington Steele in 1983 as the comedic foil to co-actors Stephanie Zimbalist and Pierce Brosnan. She continued to make guest appearances on various television series for the next decade such as St. Elsewhere.
