Gina Lollobrigida widely known to many in the film industry simply as Gina, is a multi-talented Italian actress, sculptor and photojournalist. Being among the top paid actresses of the 50’s and 60’s, her current estimated worth is approximately $20 million.
The Mona Lisa of the 20th century, as she was nicknamed, was born to a carpenter on July 4, 1927 in Subiaco, Italy. Gina was brought up in the mountain village where she consistently undertook modeling which put her in the limelight to participate in the Miss Italy contest. Unfortunately, she came third in the contest. This was just but a start for this spirited actress who went ahead to scoop numerous awards in her acting career.
She obtained her breakthrough role in 1953 courtesy of the film “Beat the Devil”. Shortly thereafter she fell in love and married Milko Skofic, a Slovenian doctor. Following her marriage, she provided the world with yet another strong performance in the movie “Beautiful But Dangerous” in 1955. This particular movie earned her the title “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World”.
In 1961 Gina went on to win a Golden Globe Award. Her acting career came to a sudden halt for her to focus on photography throughout the better part of the 1970’s.
She wasn’t done completely with acting however, and starred in another movie called “Italian Mia” in 1973. As her focus continued on photography she took snapshots of renowned celebrities among the likes of Henry Kissinger, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman and even obtained an interview with the Cuban Communist leader, Fidel Castro.
Gina Lollobrigida managed to scoop numerous high-end awards in all her careers: six David di Donatelo, another six Bambi Awards and two Nastro d’Argento. She was a Golden Globe Award nominee for three consecutive times and eventually won in 1961 as World Film Favourite – 1961.
1985 was another great year for her photography career having been nominated as an officer of Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 1992, she won the Legion d’honneur.
