Congolese politician and former Warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba was born into wealth. He was educated in Brussels and built his business empire through shady Diamond mining operations in what is now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Despite his multiple convictions by the International Criminal Court where some assets have been seized, Jean-Pierre Bemba’s net worth as of February 2016 is estimated to still be between $250 to $300 Million Dollars.
As he built additional wealth for himself in the 1990s, he was able to use political power to further his interests. He became the right hand man to President Mobutu Sese Seko, and would later go on to run for presidency himself.
Much of his wealth was created by making use of his own personal army in the early 2000s after already establishing power to take tribal lands from owners, seizing coffee and timber businesses along with diamond and hardwood smuggling operations which brought in an estimated $1 billion in annual revenue.
