Ray William Johnson is an American actor and comedian who was born on August 14, 1981 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is best known throughout the entertainment world for his popular YouTube channel, which currently has over 10 million subscribers. Today, Johnson’s net worth stands at around $5 million.
Originally, Johnson had planned to pursue a career in law. During his college years, he began posting YouTube videos that helped him earn a following of around 30 people. After having limited success with that, Johnson decided to seek regular work in a 9-5 job.
In 2009, he created a new YouTube channel titled Ray William Johnson. The channel featured Johnson posting videos of himself joking and commentating on different scenarios and events. While he enjoyed limited initial success, the channel ballooned to over five million subscribers in 2011. His channel was the first in YouTube’s history to reach that mark.
Due to his massive success and rising popularity, Johnson decided to sign on with Maker Studios in 2011. With that deal, he moved from producing his videos from his NYC apartment to doing so on the Maker Studios set in Culver City, California. Johnson left the partnership in late 2012 and made his videos independently until his last show in 2014.
Most of this has been accumulated through the Adsense dollars that he receives from advertisements on his YouTube channel.
Overall, Johnson is seen as someone who played an essential role in the rise of YouTube stars and of the YouTube brand itself. Since his massive success, other independent video makers like PewDiePie, Smosh, and JennaMarbles have worked to build subscriber lists that also exceed 10 million users.
Recently, in 2015, Johnson began to executive produce a comedy show called Top 6. He continues to pursue producing and YouTube is still one of his top performing earners.
